COURSE OBJECTIVES

The objectives of the Course are to familiarize the students with the emergence of political thought since the medieval ages and the views of different political philosophers, both western and Islamic and to link these teachings with the political systems prevalent today with special reference to Pakistan.

COURSE OUT LINE

A detailed and comprehensive study of the ideas regarding origin of  the State, beginning from Western Political Thought, the Islamic Political Thought. Administration of the State in Islamic Society and study and Emergence of Political System in Pakistan with special reference to the present setup of the Local Government.

COURSE CONTENTS:

·         Western Political Thoughts:-
o   Introduction to Political Philosophy in the context of Governance.
o   Greek Political Thought, The Theory of Greek City State.
o   Plato- Writings of Plato, the Ideal State of Plato and his contribution to the History of Political Thought.
o   Aristotle: The Politics of Aristotle.
o   Plato and Aristotle- A Comparative Study.
o   Aristotle’s Best and Ideal State, Aristotle’s idea on Revolution, Universal and Hellenic Philosophy.
o   Roman Political Thought.
o   Beginning of Modern Political Thought Niccolo Machiavelli (The Prince).
o   Political Philosophy of Reformation and Counter Reformation (Martin Luther).
o   Modern Democratic Philosophers and Processes
o   Thomas Hobbes
o   John Locke
o   Montesquieu
o   Rousseau
o   Karl Mark
o   Various Movements i.e Socialism, Communism Capitalism.

o   The Quranic State
o   Ibn-e-Arbi (9th Century)
o   Farabi (870-950)
o   Nazim-ul-Mulk Tusi (1029-1082)
o   Ghazzali (1058-1111)
o   Ibn Khaldum (1332-1406)
o   Introduction to Development of Islamic Political Thought.
o   Development of Local Government in Pakistan.
o   Political Philosphy in Pakistan.
o   Out lines of Palestine’s Political System.
o   Devolution of Powers and the Present Local Government System in Pakistan   (Nazim ,Naib-Nazim etc)
